Maple Hall Academy Staff Training & Competency

Maple Hall Academy’s advanced training program for staff is unparalleled in the industry.

Maple Hall Academy, per CARF Standards of Care, offers over 120 hours of mandatory staff training. These trainings include: CPR/First Aid, trauma informed care techniques, suicide prevention and assessment, blood borne pathogens, appropriate boundaries, driver safety, and client services to name only a few.

The Community Resiliency Model

Community Resiliency Model®

Maple Hall Academy uses The Community Resiliency Model® (CRM) to train community members to not only help themselves but to help others within their wider social network. The primary focus of this skills-based, stabilization program is to re-set the natural balance of the nervous system.

CRM®’s goal is to help to create “trauma-informed” and “resiliency-focused” communities that share a common understanding of the impact of trauma and chronic stress on the nervous system and how resiliency can be restored or increased using this skills-based approach.

CRM® Skills Trainings

The Community Resiliency Model® (CRM) Skills Trainings introduces participants to six wellness skills. CRM® Skills Trainings help create “trauma-informed” and “resiliency-informed” individuals and communities that share a common understanding of the impact of trauma and chronic stress on the nervous system and how resiliency can be restored or increased using this skills-based approach.

The two fundamental goals of CRM® are to help adults and children learn to track their own nervous systems in order to bring the body, mind and spirit back into greater balance, and to encourage people to pass the skills along to family, friends and their wider community.  CRM® can be used as self-care for those community members who are the front-line workers, responding to crisis situations.

Kate Squires, MS, LPC
Primary Therapist

Kate works as a Primary Therapist at Maple Hall Academy.  She received her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Radford University.  Prior to joining Maple Hall Academy, Kate worked as a Therapist at a residential treatment center for adolescent males in Staunton, Virginia.  Kate worked as a financial advisor for Merrill Lynch before deciding to return to school to earn her graduate degree.  Working at Merrill Lynch, Kate discovered what she most valued in a career: the importance of connecting with people, establishing relationships with individuals, and ultimately helping them improve their lives.  These goals continue to guide her work at Maple Hall Academy.

Kate utilizes a holistic approach to working with students.  She incorporates the treatment modalities of Humanistic Counseling, Play Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, Family Systems Therapy, and Solution-Focused Counseling to meet the unique needs of each student.  She enjoys helping students become effective in their daily lives through acceptance, self-compassion, self-regulation, and other interventions aimed at increasing overall resilience.  Kate loves working with this age population.  She spent many summers in the mountains of North Carolina as a camp counselor at her childhood camp, Camp Merrie-Woode.

A former collegiate soccer player and cross-country runner, Kate spends time running and hiking when away from Maple Hall Academy.  She is a member of the board of directors of Yellow Brick Road, an early learning center in Lexington. Kate also enjoys cooking and traveling with her husband, Andrew.  Between the two of them, they have had adventures on all seven continents.

Abby Sorrells, MA, LPC-S
Primary Therapist

Abby Sorrells works as a Primary Therapist for Maple Hall. She is a licensed therapist with Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology. Over the past two decades, she has developed a profound appreciation for, and interest it, the perinatal field as well as early childhood development. Abby began her residency training in the child welfare system, providing therapy to children and families in the foster care and adoptive systems, and discovered a strong passion and affinity for working with the unique challenges faced by this population.

Abby has spent most of her career working within the field of attachment, which speaks to her at an instinctual level about how we relate to one another and who we are as species. This subspecialty has magnified and deepened her understanding of trauma-informed-care, child development, parenting, and intimate relationships. Through this lens, she has learned the power
of curiosity and has witnessed the profound healing and growth that can happen within the context of relationships. Abby believes that change is always possible and that resiliency can be
nurtured, even in the most difficult circumstances.

Abby has two children, and she and her husband can often be found at their baseball games and horseback riding lessons. She adores watching her children grow and change at each stage of
development, and is frequently surprised by them. They are constant reminders to her of the importance of ‘play’ at each developmental stage.

Autumn Kelland, MA
Primary Therapist

Autumn completed her Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Liberty University after an extended break from employment to spend time with her children. After finishing her undergraduate studies in Fine Art at Southern Virginia University, Autumn completed an apprenticeship with a ceramics sculptor and worked as an aid and teaching assistant in the Rockbridge County school district. She then took a break from teaching children to instruct adult ballroom dancing, before working in engineering at Nextel/Sprint in southern California. Seeking a job to utilize her creative skills and passion for art, she was able to teach art to elementary age children at the Pacific School of Music and Arts. Through her varied work experiences and time living in California, Kansas, Maryland, and Virginia, she discovered her enthusiasm for incorporating art, music, and dance into building connections with people, as well as her devotion to working with children and adolescents. The ability to facilitate healing through arts and psychotherapy influences her work at Maple Hall.

Autumn operates from a person-centered and holistic perspective, considering biological, social, and cultural factors to develop wholeness within the self and family relationships. She strives to promote growth in students through integration of Expressive Arts, Solution-Focused, Narrative, and Experiential therapies into counseling, building confidence and self-esteem. Autumn enjoys working with adolescents and horses, and is excited to continue to provide Equine-Assisted therapy with students and families at Maple Hall.

When she is not spending time watching movies, playing games, or exploring Virginia with her husband and four children, you will find Autumn reading, walking her dogs, or baking.  Autumn likes to support her children’s interests and the local community by serving on the board of directors for the RCHS Music Boosters organization in Lexington, and attending band concerts and competitions. She also enjoys sewing, drawing, and painting, when she is not busy entertaining friends and embarrassing her children by dancing and performing karaoke.

Ashley Williams
Registered Nurse
Ashley was born in Lexington and has been raised in Rockbridge County her entire life. She met her husband in high school and they have two children and two furbabies together.
Ashley began her nursing career as a Licensed Practical Nurse for four years and has been a Registered Nurse for 8 years. While working on an inpatient mental health unit, Ashley became board certified in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing.

Robert Longley
Math and Science Teacher

Rob Longley, our math and science teacher, was raised in New England, where his family’s many fishing, sailing, and camping adventures instilled in him a love of the outdoors and the environment. After college, Rob embarked on a 30-year career in journalism, serving as a political and environmental reporter, and later, a news and managing editor, at newspapers in New York, Florida and Virginia. He also taught high school workshops on writing and was a guest lecturer on politics and journalism at several colleges and universities in New Jersey, Florida and Virginia. After three decades spent chasing stories inside and outside the Beltway, Rob traded the newsroom for the classroom. He joined the team at Maple Hall in 2021.

Rob and his wife Maria live in nearby Staunton, VA. They have two children — a daughter, who is a college freshman, and a son, a sophomore in high school. They also have three cats who graciously allow the family to live in their home.

Sarah Dalton
English Teacher

Sarah is the English Language Arts teacher at Maple Hall Academy. She is the product of a military family, born and raised on naval bases scattered up and down the East Coast. After settling into a sleepy town in Connecticut during high school, she soon traded the small-town life for the city. She received her Bachelor’s in Psychology at Southern Connecticut State University while living and working as a vegan/vegetarian cook in New Haven.

She kicked off her teaching career as a Hatha yoga instructor in college, but it was her move to Shenzhen, China, in 2018 that genuinely inspired her passion for teaching. While abroad, she began teaching English as a Second Language to students ranging from 3 years old to 50–toddlers to CEOs. That passion has grown and since led her to her role here at Maple Hall Academy.

Outside of the classroom, Sarah finds leisure in hiking with her pup, painting with watercolors, reading mystery novels, and playing Dungeons and Dragons.

Jerica Johnson
Pottery Teacher

Jerica started working at Maple Hall Academy as a youth mentor and is now our Residential Life Director. She started out caring for others as a respite caregiver for a child with special needs. While in college, Jerica worked as a Campus Programmer and planned inclusive activities for students on her campus. Jerica became passionate about the individual student experience while working at the university as a Student Success Coach for two years before coming to Maple Hall Academy. Seeing the growth and progress that the Maple Hall Academy students make daily is the reason why she works at Maple Hall.

Originally from California, Jerica loves to spend time in the sun and runs to the beach any chance she gets. She enjoys traveling and spending time with loved ones, but also enjoys some quiet time with her pets, working on puzzles, and finding new plants to love.

Bugs Utsey
Culinary Teacher

Bugs is the culinary teacher at Maple Hall Academy. He grew up in Charleston, SC, where he studied classical piano performance at an art high school. He then attended Columbia College in Chicago, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in photography.

His interest in cooking began at an early age when he would spend time with his mother and grandmothers in their kitchens. They taught him how to cook, and it has since become a lifelong passion. This passion coincides with his love of gardening, and he loves to use fresh ingredients from his garden when preparing meals. He enjoys researching new recipes, preparing authentic dishes from around the world, and feeding his friends and family.

Along with teaching our students how to prepare meals in the kitchen, he is excited to show them how to grow some of their own vegetables in our gardens and encourage them to try new foods.

Outside of work, he is an avid gardener, plays the piano, goes hiking with his husband and two dogs, and of course, cooks.

Jeremy Pack
History Teacher

Jeremy is from the Eastern Kentucky Coalfield Region of Appalachia. He graduated from the University of Kentucky with a BA in History (and he is still a huge Kentucky sports fan – GO CATS!)

In his career, Jeremy has worked in several roles that allowed him to build relationships and help others meet their goals. He has always had a passion for history, especially Appalachian history. What he loves most is sharing the rich and fascinating stories of our region. Jeremy is excited to share some of these stories with his students. Coming from a family of small town teachers and coaches, Jeremy witnessed first-hand the lasting impact educators have on the lives of their students. That’s what he hopes to bring to Maple Hall.

When he is not teaching at Maple Hall, you can find Jeremy on the golf course, reading, playing or watching sports, watching movies, or playing with his dogs Louie and Laverne.

Erica Lane
Food Services Director

Erica has been in love with cooking since she was a child. She always told her parents growing up that she wanted to be a chef. Prior to joining the Maple Hall team, Erica worked in several kitchens and even owned her own bakery for two years. It was so successful that she couldn’t keep up with the orders! Since closing her bakery, Erica worked in manufacturing but was desperate to get back in the kitchen.

Erica is excited to work for Maple Hall because it gives her the opportunity to cook for the most honest food critics in the world: children.

In her spare time, Erica is an avid reader. She doesn’t have a favorite genre but finds herself reading more fantasy than anything else.

Aflac, Ozzy and Waddles
